WITH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS’ THE LARK ASCENDING
Nicholas Hersh, conductor
Tianwa Yang, violin
Joseph Bologne: Symphony No. 2
Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending
Ravel: Tzigane
Beethoven: Symphony No. 4
Wedged between Beethoven’s Eroica and his monumental Fifth, the Fourth Symphony doesn’t get enough credit for its cheerful, engaging beauty that is pure Beethoven. Award-winning violinist Tianwa Yang revels in the range of the violin, from the soulful soaring of Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending to the fiery pyrotechnics of Ravel’s Tzigane. The concert begins with Symphony No. 2 by Joseph Bologne, also called the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the first-known classical composer of color, in Paris in the late 1700s. Nicholas Hersh conducts.
