Sunday’s jazz concert and awards show features an all-star lineup of musicians and singers

In case you haven’t seen the lineup for our Palladium Jazz Awards concert this Sunday at 4, I thought I’d share it with you here. You’re in for two plus hours of great music by a battalion of the best jazz artists working in our area.

That lineup includes James Suggs, on trumpet, LaRue Nickelson, on guitar, Valerie Gillespie, on sax and vocals, David Pate, on sax, the great vocalist Belinda Womack, John Lamb, on bass, Shawn Brown on keyboards and soulful vocals, and Jack Wilkins on sax. Musicians will intermingle and move on and off stage in various formations, all working with the La Lucha Trio, John O’Leary, piano, Mark Feinman, drums, and Alejandro Arenas on bass.

This lineup is almost an exact duplicate of the all-star crew that played the Clearwater Jazz Holiday last October.

After the show we’ll move downstairs to the Side Door for an open jazz jam led by trumpeter Dwayne White, along with pianist Maurice Allan, bassist Glenn Stevenson and Joe Renda on drums.

During the show we will be honoring pianist and singer Kitty Daniels, drummer Majid Shabazz and jazz photographer Herb Snitzer, along with a tribute to the late and much lamented Billy Pillucere. Kitty and Majid will also perform as part of the show.

Mike Cornette of WUSF Radio’s All-Night Jazz will share MC duties with me.
