Our summer of great Side Door blues, jazz and eclectic music continues this weekend.
We kick off on Friday with The Selwyn Birchwood Band. In just a few years, the band has made a significant impact on fans throughout their home state of Florida at clubs and festivals alike. Selwyn’s high-energy performances are rooted deeply in great blues traditions.
The band’s biggest triumph was their 9th place finish at the “2012 International Blues Challenge Finals” in Memphis. The band competed against 225 bands from all over the world. They got there by winning the local blues challenge, beating out a flock of other great regional bands.
This is Selwyn’s first Side Door appearance, and we’re excited to see and hear him. Selwyn is backed by a rock-solid rhythm section featuring Huff Wright on bass and Calvin Craddock on drums. The band has opened for Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, John Lee Hooker Jr., Kenny Neal, Zac Harmon, and Joanna Connor.
They are touring in support of their current CD “FL Boy” and they are working now on a second release. Don’t miss Selwyn and his band on Friday at 8.
Saturday features Swearingen and Kelli, two great acoustic pop singers, who appeared last fall on the Palladium stage. AJ Swearingen was part of a fantastic Simon and Garfunkel tribute show. Jayne Kelli opened the show and AJ joined her onstage for some heavenly harmonizing.
These two have both been headliners at the Hydeaway Cafe and are making their Side Door debut on Saturday night.
Our favorite Brazilian band, O Som Do Jazz, returns on Sunday afternoon at 3 for another great afternoon of sambas and Brazilian classics, plus some standard redone their own way. They sold-out their last show and are Side Door favorites.
