Jay and Silent Bob
The cult comedy duo Jay and Silent Bob, played by director Kevin Smith and actor Jason Mewes, are taking a new cartoon movie on the road — including to St. Petersburg’s Palladium Theater — for one-night-only screenings followed by a live show taking questions from the audience.
The unusual tour for Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie brings back the stoner duo from Smith’s 1994 indie hit film Clerks. The characters have appeared in almost every Kevin Smith movie including Chasing Amy and their own Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Called a “slacker-era Laurel and Hardy” the chubby, trench-coated Smith rarely speaks but reacts profoundly as the thin, manic Mewes delivers profane commentaries on sex and drugs that are both filthy and adorable.
Smith has called the movie a “sobriety project” for Mewes, who has struggled with heroin and OxyContin addiction. The Jay & Silent Bob Get Old podcast that Mewes records with Smith before live audiences has served as a sobriety check-in for Mewes, who discusses his recovery.
“I’m crazy proud of Jay for turning the soul-crushing bummer that is sobriety into productivity, making something as funny and fun as Groovy Movie in the process,” Smith said in a press release announcing the movie tour.
The film tour stops at the Palladium on July 6. Tickets are $25-$59 and go on sale Saturday at noon at the Ruth Eckerd Hall ticket office at 1111 McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater or by calling (727) 791-7400 or online at RuthEckerdHall.com.
