Although they only did one album together, Sarah Vaughn and Billy Eckstine, are considered one of the best duos in jazz history.
Last April, Synia Carroll sold-out the Side Door with her Sarah tribute show. She returns Friday, this time with California-based vocalist Scotty Wright. Wright will be singing Eckstine tunes and the pair will team up for some legendary Billy and Sarah duets.
The show is Friday, April 12 at 8 p.m. in our intimate Side Door Cabaret. For tickets and more info, you can follow this link. A special added attraction for this show – the great Jeremy Carter will be on stage playing sax. This show sold out the Florida Studio Theater earlier this week, so get your tickets soon before they are gone.
“We’ll be doing most of the great duets – Dedicated To You, Embraceable You, Lullaby of Birdland.” Synia told me from her home in Sarasota. “Each set will be a mix of Sarah and Billy numbers.”
And you can count on a show-stopping rendition of Body and Soul.
Billy was a decade older than Sarah, and “was like a mentor to her,” Synia said. “They only recorded one album, but they did a lot of appearances together.”
Synia has been busy since her last Sarah show, doing regular concerts and club dates in Sarasota and teaming with Whitney James for shows at American Stage in St. Pete. And she dazzled our 600-plus crowd at January’s John Lamb Birthday show.
“It’s been a real year of vocal and musical growth,” said the talented woman who only dove into jazz in the past few years.
She met Scotty Wright, who spends part of the year in Sarasota, and she thought he’d be a perfect Billy to her Sassy.
“It’s been a real pleasure to work with him,” she said.
I’m sure Friday night’s show will be a real pleasure for our Side Door audience. See you there.
