Wow. I knew I liked our great summer lineup for soul, jazz and comedy – a series we’re calling the Summer of Soul – but it’s great to know our audiences agree with me.
Last weekends shows were both sold out. Jeremy Carter brought a killer band and great arrangements to his Soul of Jazz concert, featuring the music of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and more. He was interviewed in advance on Mike Cornette’s WUSF show, All-Night-Jazz. You can hear that interview by following this link to WUSF Radio.
And the double bill of Blue Dice and the Dukes of Juke filled our stage with horns and singers, with each band playing hot, 90-minute sets and sharing the stage at various points including an inspired vocal version of “Willin’. ”
This weekend’s shows, Nate Najar’s Bossa Nova Guitars, with Phill Fest, and the return of “Mr. Excitement” Little Jake Mitchell and his big band, the Soul Searchers, are both headed to sell-outs. Little Jake is one of the last living legends of the early Soul era. Both those shows are in the Side Door cabaret.
Sunday brings the eight-piece J3 Vocal Showband performing hits from the ’50s to the ’80s. That show is well on the way to selling out our big room upstairs.
