Songwriters Rebekah Pulley and Jeff Black charm a Sunday night Side Door crowd

We had a lovely night of music Sunday – with Nashville Troubadour Jeff Black and Tampa Bay’s best songstress, Rebekah Pulley – in the Side Door.

 

The show was one of the first in what we hope will be a series of great singer/songwriter nights in our intimate club. Upcoming songwriter shows include Jeneen Terrana on Oct. 13 and one of America’s best songwriters – Kris Kristofferson in Hough Hall on Oct. 16. Stay tuned for more shows as we expand our singer/songwriter offerings.

 

Pulley’s radiant voice was captivating and she charmed the place with her quirky, self-deprecating stage patter. I love Pulley with her band, but she’s especially appealing playing solo.

 

She sang several tunes from her great new CD – Tralala – including Sweet Life, The Guy Song and a great song that’s not about a beverage but called: The Terrible Tea Song.  She even included a touch of gospel with her rethinking of This Little Light of Mine.

 

It was Pulley’s first time performing at the Side Door. She will be back. Check out her site for more on Rebekah.

 

And then Jeff Black proved why he’s been a favorite in Nashville since relocating from Kansas City in the late 1980s. He moved easily from guitar to banjo to piano and wrapped his songs in wonderful stories. Check out his site  for more about Jeff. And listen to his videos on YouTube.

 

His trip to the Palladium had taken him earlier to Valdosta’s “only dive bar” where he had the pleasure of following a “Beer Tasting.”  Apparently, there had been a lot of tasting and the highlight of his show was when somebody yelled – “Fight” – and a dozen patrons started throwing punches and the brawl spilled outside onto his van.

 

My thanks to Palladium pal Sylvia Rusche for connecting us with Jeff. She’ll be in Nashville with me this week, along with Gloria Holloway and others for the Americana Music Conference. We’ll get to hear more of Jeff’s songs, along with dozens of other great acts, including Amanda Shires. We hope to have Amanda here soon.
