I’m excited about the return of La Lucha to the Side Door this Saturday Night at 8. Their CD release party last summer was a highlight of the season. They are back in the Side Door with new material and lots of favorites from their first two albums. Joining them again is vocalist Jun Bustamante.
If you don’t know these talented young artists, you and view this great video of them performing in the Side Door by following this link:

Jazz group La Lucha plays Latin-inspired jazz with true global inspirations — its members are from Colombia, Mexico and the United States.
Pianist John O’Leary, bassist Alejandro Arenas and drummer Mark Feinman have all toured and performed at jazz festivals around the world, including events in Italy and France. Their music puts unique twists on non-jazzy songs — with covers of No Doubt, Lennon and McCartney, David Bowie, the Deftones’ and Brittany Spears.
Alejandro and Mark are among the busiest side men in town. They backed up Nate Najar and Phill Fest on Thursday in the Side Door. And were here last month for a show by the Brazilian group: O Som Do Jazz.
Here’s some background on Jun:
Jun Bustamante is a composer, producer, singer/songwriter, gardener, and community advocate currently located in St. Petersburg, FL.
Born in Hachioji, Japan and raised partly in Caracas, Venezuela, Jun has been exposed to a wide variety of music genres. After graduating high school, Jun continued her music education in New York City at NYU, where much of her time was consumed with studying jazz standards and independently recording her music on a digital 8-track.
Over the years, she has worked hard on translating these diverse genres into her unique style of music. Her sound is described as a mix of folk and jazz, with hints of hip-hop and electronica. She shifts through genres with ease; always allowing space for re-invention through words and melody. She captivates her audience with a broad range of vocal expressions and love for what she does. Jun continues to perform at various coffee shops, bars, concert venues and festivals nationwide.
Her recent highlights include; opening for Tom Morello at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA as well as a West and East Coast tour with accomplished folk singer David Rovics. She is also a featured singer for the Helios Jazz Orchestra and La Lucha jazz trio.
Her recognition by the staff of Creative Loafing led her to become Best Of The Bay’s Best Singer/Songwriter/Scene Maker of 2012 and Featured Artist on tbt’s “Sound Check” 2013
She recently released her second studio album “SYMBIOSIS” and is currently working on her third album to be released in the winter of 2013.
