I’ve been enjoying The Chopin Project website for a few years now, since my friend Fred Slutsky launched his passion project and shared it with me.
Along with bringing together all things Chopin, Fred has branched into concert production and this weekend is one of his most ambitious yet. Fred and the Chopin Project will be presenting world-renowned pianist, Matthew Graybil in concert in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota April 6-10th.
The Palladium is one of the stops on the mini-tour. Graybil will be playing our Steinway on Sunday, April 8 at 3 p.m. For tickets and information you can call our box office at 727-822-3590 or follow this link for online tickets and info.
Celebrating the centennial of the death of Claude Debussy, Mr. Graybil’s program titled “Debussy: His Friends and Enemies” is a whimsical celebration of the life, music and sharp-tongued with of Claude Debussy, based on his musical criticism and written correspondence. Musical friend and foe will be pitted against one another in a program highlighting many musical styles and periods, enlivened by Debussy’s cunning, caustic and often amusing commentary on his musical idols, contemporaries, and adversaries.
That format lets Graybil explore the music of Debussy, Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, and others, including Chopin.
I heard Graybil perform at the Dali Museum and he’s not only a gifted pianist but also a compelling storyteller, setting the stage well for each piece he plays.
Praised by The New Yorker as an “exceptional young artist” and by The Southampton Press as “hypnotic and compelling,” Graybil has performed as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Canada, France, Holland and Mexico. He made his orchestral debut at age 14 with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and has subsequently performed with the Fort Worth Symphony and the National Chamber Players.
