Nashville Troubadour Jeff Black brings his songs to the Side Door on Sunday; Rebekah Pulley opens

We are so proud to welcome Jeff Black to the Side Door this Sunday. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter is excited about returning to the ‘burg, where he made a lot of friends at shows at the Hideaway Café and the Studio at 620.

 

“It seems like I’m traveling regularly to Florida now,” Jeff said when we spoke by phone this week as he prepared to set out on a tour. “I’ve got a show I do in Gainesville now once a year.”

 

He’ll follow that show with one this Sunday evening in the Side Door. Tampa Bay’s tremendous singer-songwriter Rebekah Pulley opens the show at 7 p.m.

 

If you don’t know Jeff, you likely have heard his songs. He’s been covered by Allison Krauss, Waylon Jennings and Sam Bush, who is also a frequent collaborator. Blackhawk’s cover of Jeff’s song “That’s Just About Right,” was a Top 10 country single in 1994. He recorded his first album with the help from some musicians from a little band called Wilco. You might have heard him on NPR talking about his favorite songs with Melissa Block.

 

I heard about Jeff through St. Pete’s Americana diva Sylvia Rusche, who spends her days running the downtown State Farm office. She put us together and she’ll be introducing the show this Sunday.

 

What you’ll hear will be a mix of new tunes and songs he says just keep getting played in his shows. He’ll be playing guitar and piano.

 

“The older I get, my catalog gets bigger but there are some song I keep playing that just keep coming around. People want to hear them,” he said.

Jeff grew up near Kansas City and played in clubs with his pal Iris DeMent, who recommended he make the move to Nashville. He did that in 1989 and has made his living playing, writing and touring ever since. He managed to avoid finding a day job to support night job.

 

Nashville, now a center of gravity for the Country and Americana genres, is on fire these days, Jeff said. And it helps that the music business seems to be moving back to real musicians and real songs – something Nashville has always offered.

 

“You are seeing a resurgence of the troubadour singer-songwriter genre,  I think people like a good song. They like a good story,” he told me. “It seems like every 10 or 12 years it comes around again. This time, I think it’s going to stick around a while.”
