If you didn’t get into the Side Door last weekend – Thursday, Friday and/or Saturday – you missed some incredible jazz, Cuban salsa, a powerful soul singer and the Palladium’s first-ever Conga Line!
This weekend promises to bring even more crowd-pleasing, head-bobbing, finger-snapping, table-thumping, dance-floor-jamming music. If you haven’t been the Side Door is our 175-seat nightclub, with cabaret tables, tablecloths, candles, a bar and always great music.
It starts on Friday when great jazz and R&B singer Katt Hefner bring her band up from Sarasota – along with her brother, Stan Heffner, on Hammond B3. (Come and she’ll tell you how they ended up spelling the same name two different ways). Hefner is a recording artist, a singers-singer, and she has shared stages and worked some of the biggest names in music.
She’s also bringing a great band – including saxophonist Butch Thomas (who toured with Sting), guitarist Vincent Sims and drummer Mark Feinman. Also featured are renowned Duke Ellington bassist John Lamb, and international tenor sax player Ernie Calhoun, one of the two original founders of the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association. The show starts at 8.
Saturday night we bring back one of our favorite young bluesmen – Damon Fowler – who came out of Brandon and now lives down in Bradenton. Damon’s a fast-rising star in the blues world, known for his trio shows and for his bigger band – Southern Hospitality with JP Soars and Victor Wainwright.
Damon’s here with the trio Saturday night and Southern Hospitality will be in the Side Door for two nights in January.
Damon says the Side Door is his favorite room and his past shows have all been gems, a mix of originals, covers and surprises. He’s a master of six string electric, slide guitar, lap steel and Dobro and you’ll get a little bit of all of it on Saturday night.
On the horizon in the Side Door – Backtrack Blues Band, Nate Najar, an all-star benefit for Rose Bilal, TC Carr and his Bolts of Blue Band, Jazz singer Denise Moore and – MORE.
I’ll see you at the club this weekend!
