Kyle Schroeder shows off his Palladium Fellowship material Friday night in the Side Door

Starting in 2020 in response to the pandemic, the Palladium Fellowship program has put money into the hands of local performing artists, who are asked only to create new shows and/or write new material.

You can see and hear some of the results this Friday, 10-04, when Fellow Kyle Schroeder brings his “Falling For You” show to the Side Door.  Kyle used his $2,500 stipend to travel to Los Angeles and develop new songs in conjunction with his friend and pianist, Leo Folsom.

“Thanks to the fellowship, I could go to LA for five days and work with Leo on this material. These are ideas I had, but I never had a chance to turn them into a show.”

Known for his high-energy sax playing, Kyle wanted to do something different for this show.

“Some of my favorite music to write are ballads.” Kyle told me. “The whole night’s going to be a jazz club vibe, with a lot of improvisation. Stuff I don’t do all the time.”

He envisioned some acoustic, nylon string guitar in the show, so he went to a former Palladium Fellow, Nate Najar. Nate will play four tunes with Kyle and his band this Friday.

“This is going to be a really fun night for me, and I think the audience will love it too.” Kyle said.

A graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Kyle has emerged as a compelling force in contemporary jazz. His debut album, Get With It, released in 2022, has garnered national attention, earning airtime on Sirius XM Radio. His latest single, Swunky, is also getting regular airplay on Sirius.

Friday’s heartfelt show will include Kyle’s originals, plus covers of tunes by the Icelandic singer Laufey, John Coltrane, Brandi Carlile, and more. It’s all inspired, Kyle said, by autumn, romance and heartbreak.

In addition to Kyle on sax and Leo Folsom on piano, the band includes Josh Platt on drums, Marty Quinn on bass, and featured vocalist Songbird Shella, and Nate.
