Songbirds of a musical feather and fellow Best of the Bay 2021 award-winners, Ed Woltil and Kirk Adams have long been revered as two of Pinellas County’s prime purveyors of adventurous original pop-rock – think The Beatles, Wilco or Tom Petty, then throw in a dash of Paul Simon (Ed) or Tom Waits (Kirk) for a surprise twist. Both writers have the knack for spinning out indelible melodies that also pack an emotional punch – and they’re not shy about mining the dark side or wearing their quirks on their sleeves. Join us at the Side Door as two special St. Pete artists join forces for an evening of sublime musical artistry.

Best known for his work as singer, guitarist and chief songwriter for beloved St. Petersburg art-pop band The Ditchflowers, Ed Woltil’s music has been featured on NPR and in Performing Songwriter magazine, as well as garnering numerous regional and national awards, including First Prize in the 2000 USA Songwriting Competition and Runner-Up in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Competition, Folk category. Ed has had the honor of opening for music legends Richard Thompson (twice!), Alex Chilton, Graham Parker, Procol Harum, and Chris Isaak, and has collaborated with members of XTC and Fairport Convention. By turns wryly humorous, haunting, and uplifting, Woltil’s songs are known for pairing gorgeous melodies with clever yet affecting lyrics. Creative Loafing has called his music “exquisite…sweet, timeless pop” while Pop Matters called his Paper Boats album “a fully realized display of superb songwriting and musicianship.”

For over 20 years, Kirk Adams has enthralled St. Pete audiences with a seemingly endless supply of high-quality originals that manage to straddle the divide between mass appeal and fearless eccentricity. Mexican wrestlers, aliens and famous exploding aircraft are likely to surface alongside Kirk’s bracingly honest musings of a more personal nature—the result is a resonant body of songs that are apt to haunt your thoughts for days. John Kelly of Hideaway Presents has called Adams “a special talent and a damn good songwriter” while Creative Loafing has praised his songs as “infectiously catchy…Lennon-esque.” His transcendent single “Here and Now” was named Best of the Bay Pop Song 2021 by Creative Loafing.

Ed and Kirk bring with them a who’s who of musical compadres for this show, including local guitar legends Steve Connelly and Matt Walker and Ed’s fellow Florida Bjorkestra bandmate Dave Hamar on drums. Rumor has it that both bands will combine to cap off the night with an all-star mini-set of choice cover tunes. Don’t miss what promises to be a delicious evening of essential listening!
