Celebrate MLK Day all this month with soulful shows at The Palladium

Martin Luther King Day is officially Jan. 16, but at the Palladium we are celebrating all month with a diverse collection of shows that celebrate the sound and spirit of soul.

Alex and Siobhan

The party starts Friday, Jan. 5, when we present Soul Party, a double-bill featuring two of St. Pete’s top performers – Alex Harris and Siobhan Monique. Both are appearing with their full bands. And it is the first time they’ve ever shared a stage.

Alex is St. Pete’s reigning king of soul, consistently selling out the Side Door with his classic soul sound that has audiences singing along and dancing in the aisles. Siobhan, the niece of jazz man Buster Cooper, is St. Pete’s neo-soul diva. Her voice, her costumes and her stage show are breathtaking.

Power of Song

Our annual Sounds of the Civil Rights Movement: Power of Song celebration returns for three performances, Sunday at 3 and 7 and Monday at 7 p.m.

ADMISSION IS FREE; however, tickets are required and may be obtained during regular Box Office hours – Tues.-Fri. noon to 3 and 3 hours prior to most performances. Tickets and seating on the day of performance are offered on a first come, first served basis. Call 727-822-3590 with any questions.

The Side Door celebration features our favorite trumpet man, James Suggs, celebrating one of his inspirations, Lee Morgan. Morgan was a protege of Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro and reached critical acclaim at age 17. He spent many years with Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers, before moving on to his own groups filled with original compositions. His impressive career had a plethora of recordings and performances until it was cut short tragically at the age of 34. Tickets are going fast for this one in our intimate nightclub.

And finally, on Jan. 20, we’re bringing back one of the best shows we’ve ever presented at the Palladium – The Eve of Jackie, featuring Broadway star Chester Gregory. The show, a recreation of the final concert of the legendary entertainer Jackie Wilson, features Gregory in the lead role, supported by a full band.

You shouldn’t miss any of these. But at least pick one or two and join the Palladium as we celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday with a month of great shows.
