Stay tuned! September will be smokin’ at your favorite local Palladium

In the theater business September is normally considered the “Dog Days.” Performance seasons get going in October in Florida, but not this year.

After taking a break for Labor Day weekend, the Palladium roars back with a month of shows that offer something for everyone. I’ve linked all of these shows to our box office to make it easy for you to get tickets.

Love gospel music? Then be here Sept. 9 for the Sound of Gospel Awards show that features a battle of church choirs and church bands. I’m on vacation and I’m so sorry I’m going to miss this show.

I return just in time to welcome back one of my favorite musicals – Webb’s City: The Musical. I love the story. I love the songs. We’re bringing this back, with help from the creators, Bill Leavengood and Lee Ahlin, along with our good friends at American Stage. We’re doing the show in a “concert version” with a narrator and and all-star cast of singers and actors. Some of my favorite performers including Jim Sorensen, Emilee Dupre, Emilia Sargent, and Stephanie Roberts are part of this cast.

We are doing five shows over four days. Be sure to be there for one of them.

Last season we welcomed our newest St. Pete sensation, the Florida Bjorkesrtra, to the Palladium. On Sept. 23, leader Jeremy Douglass brings back his 12-piece band and 8 singers along with a  host of artists and arts organizations for Buffyfest, a celebration of all things Buffy and the Vampire Slayer. The show will feature the songs from “Once More With Feeling” the famous Buffy musical episode, but also songs done in the show by special musical guest like Aimee Mann, and Sarah McLachlan. Our Side Door will be transformed into a curated marketing for Buffy paraphernalia of all kinds.

This show is selling fast, so get your tickets early so you don’t get shut out (or slayed…). One of the stars of the Buffy series will be here signing autographs and sharing stories.

Our pals at the Al Downing Jazz Association are partnering with the Palladium on Sept. 24 with the Hot Club of SRQ, which includes some of my favorite players like Rodney Rojas and Nik Baltic.

I’d invite to next to Taj Mahal and Keb Mo, who are sharing our stage on Sept. 26, but that show is SOLD-OUT!

Finally, you probably know our Side Door Cabaret has been under renovation as we add new air conditioning and other amenities. We are reopening the weekend of Sept. 29, 30 and Oct. 1, wtih two nights of blues by Damon Fowler on Friday and Saturday. Sunday night we welcome a relative newcomer to our jazz community, Mark Moultrup, who will play the Side Door Sunday at 6. I really like this pianist, singer and arranger who moved here from the Windy City. He’ll have some top sidemen including James Suggs, trumpet, Dan Jordan, reeds, Mark Neuenschwander, bass and Jean Bolduc, drums.

As the song says: I’ll see you in September!
